Prof. K.V. Chalapati Rao, Ph.D.
He has the unique distinction of guiding the highest number of Ph.D.'s in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
Dr. K.V.Chalapati Rao joined Osmania University in 1988 as Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. After completing his Ph.D., he started his career in 1972 in ECIL and worked for 16 years in various capacities. Initially, he was involved in Software Development for ECIL computers and was deputed to the Computer Group of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), where he worked on the development of the Operating System for the ECIL Computer, TDC-316. Subsequently he was made in charge of the software development for the Air Force Project, Automatic Data Handling System (ADHS) for ADGES (Air Defense Ground Environment System). In 1988, he joined Osmania University as a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, which conducts Undergraduate and Post Graduate programmes in Computer Science & Engineering, Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Ph. D. programmes and other PG programmes (Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT), and MS (by research) in collaboration with ECIL).
Prof. Chalapati Rao held various positions in Osmania University, including Head of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering; Chairman, Board of Studies in Computer Science & Engineering; Convener, MCA Admissions; Convener, MCACET 2000 (State-wide Common Entrance Test); Coordinator, Project IMPACT (a World Bank Project under Dept. of Electronics); and Dean, Faculty of Engineering. He is the Regional Coordinator for evaluation of student projects for computer courses under DOEACC Society, New Delhi.
Prof. Chalapati Rao has published papers and given presentations in National and International conferences in several areas including Software Engineering, Real Time Systems, Operating Systems, and Distributed Systems. Under his supervision, eight candidates were awarded Ph.D. and six others are currently working for their Ph.D.
Prof. Chalapati Rao gave special courses for industry including Singareni Collieries, Satyam Computers, Frontier Information Technology Ltd., DRDL etc. He has also done consultancy work for Frontier Information Technology Ltd., Department of Space, Govt.of India, and the Police Department of Andhra Pradesh. He is on the Technical committee for the eCOPS Project of the A.P. Police, which won a National Award. Considering his professional contributions in both industry and academic fields, Professor Rao was given 'AP. Scientist Award' for the year 2000 by APCOST.
